The
members of Post 281 hope you will find the answers in this section to
most of your veteran-related questions on American Legion activities
and benefits.
Two recent additions to this section are for the support of our active duty personnel in Iraq, Afghanistan and other hazardous duty areas. We ask for your support of both organizations:
1) The Military Support Group of South Jersey was established in September 2004. The group meets on the second Thursday of each month, from 7pm to 9pm, in the Chews United Methodist Church, 319 Black Horse Pike (Rt. 168), Glendora, NJ. Family members, friends, members of the military and of veterans' groups all are welcome to attend meetings. Meetings are open, also to anyone who cares about ad wants to support the members of our military. The next few meetings are scheduled for:
• Thursday, July 8, 2010 — coffee–6:30 pm, meeting–7:00 pm
• Thursday, August 12, 2010 — coffee–6:30 pm, meeting–7:00 pm
• Thursday, September 9, 2010 — coffee–6:30 pm, meeting–7:00 pm
We support our deployed troops by collecting small toiletry items, snacks, food and entertainment items (DVD movies and music CDs, crossword puzzles, magazines, playing cards, etc.) to ship as part of care packages sent to our men and women currently serving overseas. In addition, we collect new afghan blankets and quilts for our injured men and women in military hospitals in Baghdad, Germany and in the United States. New clothing is sent to MASH units in Baghdad. Members of the group write to our deployed men and women. We participate in local New Jersey veterans events and support veterans homes and hospitals by collecting clothing, toiletries and by volunteering. Every month we attend military homecomings in our area, and provide support as needed to their families waiting at home.
In addition to all of the support we provide by our attendance, goods or monetary collections, we also help one another through our fear of having a loved one in war. Those who served help by offering their experience to those of us whose loved ones now are serving.
2) The Soldiers’
Angels Foundation was created to make certain that
no soldier remain unsupported by those here at home. You may “adopt”
a soldier, write, send packages, or make a contribution toward sending
necessities to soldiers who might not receive them otherwise. Please
visit their site and help members or our armed forces who are stationed far from home and
need someone to care.
Additional sections are provided with links to sites of interest to
veterans, to those researching military topics, and to resources available
to all community residents.
