Department of New Jersey Scholarships


1.   Luterman Scholarships 
Seven Luterman scholarships will be awarded by the Department of New Jersey for 2010. In the past, scholarships have been in the following amounts:
Two $4,000 scholarships
Three $2,000 scholarships
Two $1,000 scholarships

Application forms must be postmarked no later than February 15, 2010.

Luterman Scholarship Eligibility
1. Applicant must be a natural or adopted descendant of a member of The American Legion, Department of New Jersey (son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, etc.)
2. Applicant’s forbearer must be a current member of The American Legion, Department of New Jersey, or if deceased, a MEMBER AT TIME of death.
3. Applicant must be a member of the graduating class of high school including Vo-tech for the year 2010.
4. Applicant must use the award the year he or she received it.

2.   Stutz Scholarship
One Stutz scholarships will be awarded for 2010 by the Department of New Jersey:
One $4,000 scholarship ($1,000/year for 4 years)

Application forms must be postmarked no later than February 15, 2010.

Stutz Scholarship Eligibility
1. Applicant must be a natural or adopted son or daughter of a member of The American Legion, Department of New Jersey.
2. Applicant’s parent must be a current member of The American Legion, Department of New Jersey, or if deceased, a MEMBER AT TIME of death.
3. Applicant must be a member of the graduating class of high school including Vo-tech for the year 2010.
4. Applicant must start to use the award the year he or she received it. Four year scholarship to be completed in four consecutive years.

3. Oratorical Contest
The purpose of the 64th High School Oratorical Contest, sponsored by The American Legion as a National Americanism Activity, is to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of the Constitution of the United States. Other objectives to be gained are those of leadership, the abiliy to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparations for the acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges, of American citizenship.
Department of NJ Scholarship Awards for 2008
1st Place $4,000 scholarship*
2nd Place $2,500 scholarship
3rd Place $2,000 scholarship
4th Place $1,000 scholarship
5th Place $1,000 scholarship
* Department of NJ winner will receive an additional $1,500 awarded by the National Organization.

Full information on the 2010 Oratorical Contest will be available on the National Organization website or through your high school guidance department.
