The
Samsung American Legion Scholarships were established
by the Samsung Corporation and are administered
by The American Legion. The endowment was given
in appreciation of the U.S. veterans who came
to the aid of Korea during the Korean War.
Eligibility:
High school juniors who participate in and complete
either an American Legion Boys State or American
Legion Auxiliary Girls State program —and—
A direct descendant (i.e. child, grandchild, great-grandchild,
etc. or legally adopted child) of a U.S. veteran
who served during a period of war.
The number and amount of scholarships
awarded will depend on funds available. In recent years,
seven $20,000 scholarships and ninety-one $1,000
scholarships were awarded.

American Legacy Scholarships
Eligibility:
Child/childen or legally adopted child/children of active
duty United States Military, Guard and Reserve personnel
who were federalized and died on active duty on or after
September 11, 2001. Must be a high school senior or
high school graduate to apply for the scholarship. Scholarship
is for undergraduate study at a U.S. school of higher
education.
Aid Offered: The amount and number of awards depends on the
income derived from the trust established to fund the
scholarship. Scholarship recipients may reapply for the
award.
Deadline: Application must be postmarked not later than
April 15, 2010.

National Oratorical Contest
The purpose of the
National High School Oratorical Contest, sponsored
by The American Legion as a National Americanism
Activity, is to develop a deeper knowledge and
understanding of the Constitution of the United
States. Other objectives to be gained are those
of leadership, the ability to think and speak clearly
and intelligently, and preparation for the
acceptance of the duties and responsibilities,
the rights and privileges, of American citizenship.
National winner of the 2009 Oratorical Contest was Andrew Dykstal, from Indiana. The 2009 National Finals Contest were held in
April, at the Indiana University-Purdue
University at Indianapolis Conference Center &
Hotel, Indianapolis, Indiana. Quarter-Final and
Semi-Final Contests were held Saturday, April
18. Championship Contest was held Sunday, April
19.

Each Department (State) winner who is certified into and participates in the first round of the National Contest will receive a $1,500 scholarship.
Each first round winner who advances to and participates in the second round, but does not advance to the Final Round, will receive an additional $1,500 scholarship to pursue education beyond high school.

4.
Eagle Scout Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded
for The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year. The
winner of the competition receives a $10,000 scholarship
and the three runners-up each are awarded $2,500 scholarships.
